Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) forecasting

How much revenue could AI answers send your store?

This calculator turns AI visibility into a revenue range for your Shopify store. It starts from numbers you already know, so there is no market sizing exercise. It shows three scenarios side by side, keeps direct revenue separate from influenced revenue, and tells you the month the investment pays back. The values below are examples. Replace them with your own.

Incremental figures compare each scenario with your current visibility, per year after the ramp. Influenced revenue is an estimate you control and is never added to direct revenue. Target and stretch are held at or above the level before them.

Investment starts in month 1. Gains build in a straight line up to the month you set for full effect, then hold. Compared with doing nothing.

Want to know which scenario is realistic for your store? The SEO Growth Audit includes an AI search visibility assessment, so your visibility figure comes from measurement instead of an assumption.

How this tool works

Seven steps from AI visibility to profit

Every number above comes from this chain. Each step shows the method, then works it through with the figures you entered, so you can check the maths and change any assumption you disagree with.

  1. 1
    Size the demand in your category
    How many relevant searches happen each month. Your own figure is used if you enter one. Otherwise organic sessions are divided by the share of demand your organic traffic captures.
    Demand = 80,000 sessions ÷ 5% = 1,600,000 searches a month
  2. 2
    Find the part handled by AI assistants
    Some of that demand now goes to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews. Your AI share assumption gives the number of questions asked in AI each month.
    AI questions = 1,600,000 × 15% = 240,000 a month
  3. 3
    Count how often you appear
    AI visibility is the share of those answers that name your brand. Appearances are AI questions multiplied by that share.
    Appearances = 240,000 × 10% = 24,000 a month (today)
  4. 4
    Turn appearances into clicks
    Not every mention sends traffic. Click-through depends on how you appear: about 10% when cited first with a link, about 4% when cited in the sources, about 1.5% when named without a link.
    Visits = 24,000 × 4% (cited in the sources) = 960 a month
  5. 5
    Turn clicks into orders and revenue
    Clicks convert at your conversion rate and each order is worth your average order value. Profit applies your contribution margin. This is direct revenue: it can be tied to a visit from an AI answer.
    Orders = 960 × 2% = 19.2 · Revenue = 19.2 × £85 = £1,632 a month · Profit = £898
  6. 6
    Compare each scenario with today
    Steps 3 to 5 run three times: at your current visibility, your target and your stretch figure. Stretch also moves your placement up one step, for example from cited in the sources to cited first. Incremental profit is the scenario minus today. ROI is incremental annual profit divided by annual investment.
    Target: (£4,896 − £1,632) × 12 = £39,168 revenue · £21,542 profit ÷ £30,000 = 0.7x ROI
  7. 7
    Spread the gains over time
    AI visibility takes time to build. The gain ramps in a straight line up to your chosen number of months. The monthly investment is subtracted from month 1, and payback is the first month the running total turns positive.
    Full effect in month 6 · Target pays back: not within 12 months · Stretch: month 2
Direct and influenced revenue

Direct revenue counts only visits that come from a click in an AI answer. It is the figure you can defend to a finance team, and it is small because few people click.

Influenced revenue estimates people who see your brand in an answer and then search for you or type your address later. It is a multiple of direct clicks that you set. The two are never combined in one headline number.

Checking against real data

Enter your AI referral sessions for the last 90 days from GA4. The tool works backwards to the visibility that would produce them and lets you apply it with one click.

AI Overviews traffic is reported as Google organic and cannot be separated in GA4. Some AI apps also strip the referrer, so treat the result as a floor.

What this tool does not do
  • It does not measure your real visibility. Only prompt tracking can.
  • It does not promise results. Target and stretch are inputs you choose.
  • It does not model changes in AI usage or click-through over time.
  • It does not include other costs beyond the monthly investment you enter.

Defaults are planning assumptions, not measured benchmarks: 5% organic capture, 15% of demand handled in AI, click-through of 10%, 4% and 1.5% by placement, 1.0 influenced visits per click, 6 months to full effect. Replace them with your own data where you have it.

Frequently asked questions about AEO forecasting

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO earns rankings and clicks in a list of results. AEO earns a place inside an answer that an AI system writes, either as a named recommendation, a cited source or both. The two share foundations such as crawlable pages, clear entities, strong content and authority. They differ in how success is measured: in AI answers you track how often you are named and cited, not just where you rank.

What is an AI visibility rate and how do I measure it?

Where do the default assumptions come from?

Why is direct revenue so much smaller than the SEO forecast?
